Spaso - Transfiguration Cathedral

ooh Lavra, 24, 4, Pechersk district, Kiev, Kiev, Ukraine

Description:

The Savior on Berestov is the oldest Kiev temple in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The construction of the temple dates back to the XII century. The six-pillar cross-domed church with three aisles is included in the complex of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. It was built as the main cathedral of the Transfiguration Monastery, which by that time had become the residence of the Kiev princes from the Monomakhovich family.

In the tombs of the temple are buried the daughter and grandson of Vladimir Monomakh, as well as his son - the founder of Moscow Yuri Dolgoruky.

Over the centuries, the temple was repeatedly completed and rebuilt. From the original complex of the church, the first tier of a rectangular porch has been preserved. In the XVIII century, during the overhaul, it received a five-headed completion. In 1813-1814, according to the project of the architect A.I. Melensky, a three-tier bell tower was attached to the church. In this form, the temple has survived to our days.

Of interest are the minted and carved decorations of the throne, made by the master F.M. Korobka, as well as the unique frescoes of the XI-XII centuries “Miracle fishing” and “Angel with a sphere”, revealed under a later painting of the XVII century. You can also see the preserved fragments of wall masonry of the late XI - early XII centuries.
