St. Michael Monastery
wool. Triochapestry, 6, Ki.v, 01601, Ukraine
Description:
Mikhailovsky Golden-Domed Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Kiev. There is an assumption that the cathedral was the first with a gilded top, and that it was from him that this tradition originated. Today it is one of the main churches of the Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.
The temple was built in 1113 by order of Prince Sviatopolk and was dedicated to the patron of Kiev, Archangel Michael.
The building of the monastery is made in the Ukrainian Baroque style, although the flowering of this style began only in the XVII century. The monastery was repeatedly destroyed and during the latter in 1930 the monastery cathedral was destroyed. It was restored in 1997-1998, fragments of the seized frescoes were returned.
At the monastery there are Orthodox theological schools. The bell tower of the monastery is equipped with a chime clock and a carillon musical instrument for performing complex melodies on bells.
