Refectory Church of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra

kiev street of the January Uprising, 25

Description:

In 1893-1895, one of the temples of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra was erected - the Refectory Church. Its project was developed by Academician of Architecture Nikolaev V.N.

The church was built on the site of a refectory in the Russian-Byzantine style. All the interior was designed by Shchusev. Painters Popov G., Izhakevich I., and others worked on the decoration of the building. Thanks to them, on the walls and vaults of ceilings depicted biblical stories and ancient faces of saints.

The icons consisting of marble are made in pseudo-Russian style. From the site, which is located at the back of the refectory, you can see the landscape of the Near and Far Caves, as well as the Left Bank of Kiev and the Dnieper.

Near the wall of the refectory are the graves of Iskra, Kochubey, and Stolypin, who was killed in 1911. The refectory chamber has not been used for its intended purpose for 100 years, because now the monastery dining room is located elsewhere. During the services, not only the church, but also the Refectory Chamber is filled with believers.

Today, the Refectory Church is the most magnificent temple of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The interior features a large panel depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. In the interwindow walls in the refectory, ascetic images of desert monks are written out. Outside, the building resembles the Constantinople Church of Sofia. It is a large snow-white building with a bright green roof and domes, located near a picturesque river.
