Vydubitsky monastery

Kyiv, Vydubitskaya Street, 40, Ukraine

Description:

Vydubitsky monastery was a family monastery of the son of Vsevolod, Vladimir Monomakh, and his descendants. The monastery was founded between 1070 and 1077 by Vsevolod Yaroslavich, the son of Yaroslav the Wise.

The first buildings of the monastery were wooden and have not survived to our days. Only a few churches survived centuries. One of them is the Church of Archistratig Michael, built under Vsevolod. This is a cross-domed temple with three boundaries, built in the technique of a drowned row.

To date, the architectural composition of the monastery includes the Church of Archangel Michael (1070-1769), St. George's Church (1696-1701) and the Savior Church (1696-1791), made in the style of Ukrainian Baroque. St. Michael’s Cathedral of small size has hardly changed since the 11th century.

The monastery is active: on its territory there is a pottery workshop, a workshop of vine weaving and a small shelter.
