The building of the former Church of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine
Contract area, 2, Kiev, Kyiv region, Ukraine
Description:
The building of the former Church of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine is located on Kontraktova Square, in Kiev. The church was founded by the Greek community of the city in 1738. The brick structure on the site of a wooden chapel was built during 1739-1941. Initially, the architecture of the church was typically Ukrainian: three-part and three-domed. After the reconstruction of the temple in the 19th century, only one dome remained. The iconostasis of the sanctuary was made in the Rococo style.
In 1746, the church became a monastery of the Archdiocese of Sinai. A large complex of buildings was created here, which in 1914 acquired a profitable house and a bell tower. In 1928, the monastic structures were taken over by the communal services, and some of them over the years collapsed, and the church was partially dismantled.
Today, the office of the National Bank of Ukraine is located in this magnificent historical building.
