Ukraine, Lviv, Russkaya Street 5/7
Description:
The ensemble of the Assumption Church - the most beautiful example of the Lviv Renaissance - was formed in the XVI - XVII centuries in the heart of the city on Podvalnaya Street, 9. In addition to the Assumption Church itself, it includes the chapel of the Three Saints and the tower of Kornyakt.
The building of the Assumption Church, built of white limestone by architect Paul Rimlyanin, is crowned with three massive domes. The construction of the temple began in 1591 and was completed in 1629. The interior of the church has preserved icons of the passionate cycle of work of Lviv icon painters of the XVII century. Stained glass windows on the windows were created at the beginning of the XX century by the famous artist Peter Kholodny. Attract the attention of visitors and luxurious chandeliers.
To the northern wall of the Assumption Church adjoins a small three-domed building of the chapel of the Three Hierarchs. The portal of the chapel is decorated with beautiful carvings depicting a vine. The ensemble is completed by a square tower - a bell tower built at the expense of the Greek merchant Constantine Kornyakt by the architect Peter Barbon.
The harmonious combination of the style of the Italian Renaissance with the traditions of national architecture make the ensemble of the Assumption Church one of the most interesting architectural monuments of Lviv.
