S. Bandera Street
ooh Stepana Bandera, Lviv, Lviv region, Ukraine
Description:
This street, although under a different name, was listed in the city plan in 1750. All the land lying along it was in the possession of the Polish aristocrats Czartoryski, but then it was divided into several parts, one of which was ceded to the Polish princes Sapiegam. In honor of one of the representatives of this family, Leon Sapiega, in 1886 this street was first named.
Then a series of renamings began. In the 40s of the XX century it was called Komsomolskaya, then -
Fürstenstrasse, since 1944 - Stalin Street, since 1961 - Mir Street. It was only 30 years later that it was called what it is today.
On Stepan Bandera Street you can find many interesting buildings and architectural monuments. Along with the "civil" buildings of the Lviv city police department, adjoining the former political prison, the main building of the Lviv Polytechnic, the academic gymnasium, on Bandera Street you can find the former church of St. Mary Magdalena, and the "House of Finkler", interesting for its unusual architectural solution, and the former monastery of St. Teresa.
