The Transfiguration Church

Ukraine, Poltava region, Mirgorod district, village of Great Sorochintsy

Description:

The Transfiguration Church is located in the village of Veliky Sorochintsy near the Psel River (Poltava), which is not far from the district center of Mirgorod. Hetman Daniel the Apostle founded the church in 1728, where he was rested after his death with his family. The entrance to the tomb is now filled.

The architecture of the church was occupied by the famous architect Stepan Kovnir at that time. By the way, he also took part in the construction of the Kiev-Pechora Lavra. For the construction of the church, the best masters (masons, wood carvers) from nearby cities and villages were invited. A regiment of Hetman Cossacks was sent to help the builders.

The walls of the Transfiguration Church are stone, more than one and a half meters thick. The church now has five domes, although there were originally nine. Part of the domes could not be restored after the fire of 1811 (the fire occurred due to lightning strike).

In the middle of the 20th century, the church ceased to function, but in late 1989 it was returned to the Orthodox. In 1999, due to sponsorship, a major overhaul of the church facades, roof, windows began.

Currently, the church has a Sunday school, a library with a large collection of spiritual literature.
