Odessa catacombs
Description:
Odessa catacombs is an underground labyrinth and a network of passages under Odessa and its environs with a total length of about 2,500 kilometers. The temperature regime here all year round is kept at around +14 degrees Celsius. The depth in some places reaches up to 100 meters.
The history of the origin of the catacombs is associated with the extraction of shell and limestone for the construction of the city since the 18th century. This cheap, but suitable for construction material was very actively used for the construction of houses, churches, barracks and other buildings for various purposes. The stone was cut without any definite plan, chaotic. This explains the complexity of this labyrinth, where there is no regularity.
In addition to the anthropogenic origin of the catacombs, the network includes passages of natural origin, for example, karst caves.
Catacombs are very important for science. For several decades, scientists have been collecting paleontological, ecological, historical and other information.
Without a doubt, the catacombs are one of the most significant and interesting sights of Odessa!
