Odesa

Holy Assumption Monastery

Ukraine, Odessa, Per. Lighthouse 6

Description:

This future center of spiritual culture arose as a result of a tragic accident. Once, during a pleasure walk, the Moldovan landowner Alexander Teutul and his friends made a fire. The Greek ship sailing to Odessa, mistaking the fire for the lighthouse, strayed from the indicated course and ran aground. As a result, several people died. Alexander Teutul, as a man of faith and greatly experienced what happened, decided to donate his estate to the Russian Orthodox Church.

So, in 1814, a wooden church in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God and a bishop’s courtyard appeared on the donated territory. And in 1827, the lighthouse was completed. Subsequently, the buildings were rebuilt several times and in 1825 the consecration of the stone temple took place. In addition, there was a refectory, a hotel for visitors, gardens and vineyards.

In the revolutionary years, the property of the monastery will be confiscated, and the temple itself will be blown up. Most priests and monks were exiled. The real revival began only in 1944, when the monastery began to gradually improve. In 1946, Patriarch Alexy I of Moscow and All Russia visited this monastery and even created his summer residence. Therefore, the monastery began to be called Patriarch.

Now the Holy Dormition Patriarchal Monastery is the center of the spiritual life of Odessa and a place of pilgrimage.
