Odesa

Assumption Cathedral (Odessa)

Ukraine, Odessa, street. Transfiguration, 70

Description:

The stunning beautiful temple was built at the expense of patrons - Odessa merchants Nikolai and Jacob Cherepennikov. The author of the project is the famous architect L.Z. Otton. The beginning of construction dates back to 1855, since it was at this time that Saint Innocent of Kherson laid the first stone. After 4 years, in 1869, Archbishop Dimitry of Kherson and Odessa held the rite of consecration.

Unfortunately, in the Soviet era of fever, the cathedral was blown up by communists. At the end of XX-XXI centuries, the temple was restored again, and in 2008 large restoration works were carried out. Now travelers can visit this temple in all its splendor. They will see a two-story temple consisting of two branches and having three thrones in each. The southern part of the upper church is consecrated in honor of St. Jacob, and the North in the name of St. Xenia. Travelers must visit the lower temple, which is consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas.

On the territory of the Cathedral is Kasperovskaya Miraculous Icon of the Mother of God, brought in 1854 from the village of Kasperovo. And also believers can touch the relics of St. Innocent and righteous Archpriest Jonah of Atamana.
