Odesa

Jewish Museum

ooh Nezhinskaya, 66, Odessa, Ukraine

About the company:

At the beginning of the XX century Odessa was the third city in the world by the number of Jewish population (after New York and Warsaw). The creation of the Museum of the History of the Jews of Odessa became an opportunity to tell about the life of this people as a whole and about the outstanding Jews of Odessa.

“The Jews made Odessa,” wrote Isaac Babel. The museum was also created by Jews trying to preserve the unique Odessa color, which is famous for this wonderful city by the sea. The former communal apartment, now purchased, housed 7,000 items of storage (documents, photographs, books, newspapers, postcards, religious and household items, musical instruments, works of art, etc.). More than 1,000 of them are on permanent display. The financial costs of replenishing the exposition are minimal due to the gratuitous assistance of collectors and citizens carrying the remains of family relics here.

The situation in the museum is unshowed, everything is quiet, homelike, without unnecessary fuss and unnecessary pathos. And every thing, however small and inconspicuous, has its own destiny, connected with a particular person or the life of a whole family. A beautiful, touching museum that takes a fresh look at the history of the Jewish people.
