Duben castle
Description:
In 1492, over the Ikva River in the district center of Dubno, the Dubensky Castle was built - a large snow-white building with a red roof. It was founded by Konstantin Ivanovich Ostrozhsky.
In the XVII century, the castle was rebuilt by Janusz Ostrogsky in the style of the late Renaissance. During its existence, the building was never captured by Cossacks, Tatars, Russian or Swedish troops, despite their attempts to take possession of the castle.
From the city side, the building is fortified by a grontwerk consisting of two casematted bastions designed by Vauban. In front of the grontwerk there is a deep ditch with an escarp. In the gate building of three floors, there are entrance gates. On the territory of the Dubensky Castle there are ancient two-storey palaces of Ostrozhsky and Lubomirsky.
In this place, a whole system of underground passages and cellars was created, which Gogol described in his novel Taras Bulba. Today, in one of the basements there is a museum of torture instruments. Theatrical excursions are held here. A souvenir shop is open near the castle, and the Taras Bulba festival is held on the square in front of the building every year.
