Description:
Molchansk defensive monastery-fortress is located on the banks of the Seimas, Putivl. The monastery was founded in 1570 by monks who moved here from the Molchansk desert, located 20 km from the city. In 1604, behind the walls of the fortress was hiding the impostor False Dmitry I, who after the death of Boris Godunov came from here to Moscow. The complex of the monastery is dominated by the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, which was built in 1585 and was rebuilt several times in the XVII-XVIII centuries. The monastery also includes the church of John the Forerunner, built in the XIX century, a gate tower, acting as a bell tower, a cell and abbot building, outbuildings and a refectory.
If you leave the monastery building and go down the forest road to the Seimas, then on the right side of the mountain you will see a low wall with a variety of loopholes: narrow, designed for rifle fire, and wide arches for guns.
