Monument to Princess Yaroslavna in Putivl
hill Gorodok, Putivl, Sumy region. Ukraine
Description:
The glorious city of Putivl since school times is known to us from the textbook text “Words about Igor’s regiment”. The monument to Princess Yaroslavna in this city also became a monument to all Russian women.
The monument to Yaroslavna was designed by the outstanding Ukrainian sculptor V.N. Klokov and installed in 1983 on the territory of the so-called Gorodok. The town is a historical area in the center of the city. On three sides it is protected by steep slopes, and from the north it is connected to the flat plateau by a narrow isthmus. Archaeological excavations of recent years have shown that in the VIII century the town served as a fortified community center – a sanctuary for nearby Slavic settlements. Around the perimeter he was surrounded by a double palisade. At the entrance to the modern Town, a swollen moat and a low shaft are visible. These are the remains of the fortifications of the border town, founded in 988 by Grand Duke Vladimir Svyatoslavovich on the site of an ancient Slavic sanctuary.
From here Princess Yefrosinya Yaroslavna accompanied her husband Prince Igor on the campaign, here she received the sad news of the defeat of the army and the capture of the prince. As she climbed the city wall, Yaroslavna cried, addressing the river: “Take my tears to the sea.” This is how the sculptor depicted her: lifting her hands to the sky, turning to higher forces, a loving woman prays for protection and salvation. The image of Yaroslavna became a symbol of peace, family ties and love.
