Description:
St. Andrew’s Chapel is located on the territory of Svyatogorsk State Historical and Architectural Reserve. This monument is included in the list of architectural monuments of national importance.
The chapel of St. Andrew the First-Called has a second name - the Upper Pavilion for pilgrims, the middle of the XIX century. It is located on the side, closer to the east, from the Nikolsky temple. Chapel on a chalk rock, at an altitude of more than 141 meters above sea level.
St. Andrew’s chapel was built in the XIX century, the middle of the 50s. The opening was timed to coincide with the reopening of the monastery in 1844. Externally, the chapel looks like a covered arbor, built of unhewn sandstone, which is folded into huge pillars. The inner faces of the pillars are carved and form through openings in the form of arches. Above the synoptic entablature is a rolling roof, ending with a cross.
There is an observation deck adjacent to the chapel, thanks to which you can see a wonderful panorama. There is no altar in the chapel, but it is intended for prayer. In 1922, the monastery was closed, and the chapel lost the final cross, the rolled roof and the old paintings. The chapel of St. Andrew was restored in 1988-1989.
