Bernardine monastery

d. Zbarage, st. Independence, 8.

Description:

In 1627, Prince Yuri Zbarazhsky founded the Bernardine Monastery in Zbarazh. The complex was completely completed in 1650. The three-nave Church of St. Anthony, built in 1723, is the central structure of the monastery. The complex also includes a two-tier gate bell tower in the Baroque style and a two-story cell building.

In 1723-1755, at the expense of the Kiev voivode Yu Pototsky, the restoration of the temple was carried out. It turned into a magnificent building, combining two architectural styles: Baroque and Renaissance. The project was designed by architect I. Gantz. The temple has two high towers and a concave facade. In the interiors there is illusory painting and wall painting. On the territory of the monastery there was a philosophical school, a gymnasium and a hospital.

During the Soviet Union, the monastery was abandoned. It was returned to the Bernardines in 1990. To this day, fragments of frescoes that belong to the XVIII-XIX centuries and altars of the XVIII century with sculptures of Osinsky A have been preserved here. In the basements of the monastery you can find many ancient burials.
