Ternopil

Dominican cathedral

Description:

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Dominican Church is a monument of sacred architecture, the cathedral of the Greek Catholic Church in Ternopil, the main temple of the Ternopil-Zborov diocese. It was built in 1749-1779 in the Baroque style.

The author of the project is August Moshchinsky (for a long time the authorship was mistakenly attributed to Jan de Witte).

The interior was painted by S. Stroinsky, frescoes of side naves by Y. Khoinitsky.

There was a monastery at the Dominican Church. For the maintenance of the monks, the founder of the church I. Pototsky recorded the village of Stegnikovsky, now Ternopil district. Since 1772, the district institutions were placed in the monastery. From 1820 to 48, the Jesuits were housed here. Some rooms were occupied by a gymnasium.

In 1903, the Dominicans returned to the church. 1908-10 the church was restored under the direction of architect Vladislav Sadlovsky: a new dome was built, old frescoes were restored and new ones were painted (artist K. Politinsky), a new organ and small altars were installed, electrified.

In April 1944, during the battles for Ternopil, the Dominican Church suffered significant destruction. Post-war restoration was completed in 1957. 1978-89 Ternopil Art Gallery was located in the church. Since 1989 - the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin of the UGCC (the schedule of the central nave was performed by G. Zhuravsky) in the monastery. The premises are located DATO.
