Terebovlyansky Castle (1631)

ooh Pidzamche, Terebovlya, Ternopil region, Ukraine

Description:

Terebovlyansky castle is located in the city of Terebovlya. The first wooden-earth fortifications on this place existed in the X-XIII centuries. In the middle of the XIV century, when Terebovlya fell under the rule of the Poles, King Casimir III built a stone castle surrounded by defensive structures. The castle was subjected to numerous Tatar raids, repeatedly repaired and restored. Starosta Alexander Balaban in 1631 began the construction of a new castle on the site of the old one. Construction was completed in 1634.

In 1675, the castle, thanks to the feat of the wife of the commander of the garrison, Anna Dorota Khshanovskaya, who managed to maintain the morale of the defenders of the castle, withstood the Turkish siege. In 1687, the castle was unexpectedly attacked by the Tatars and burned. He hasn't recovered since.

The castle had three towers and was protected by defensive walls. The most powerful walls, ramparts and moats protected the most vulnerable north side. In the courtyard there was a stone two-storey palace, as well as wooden household and residential buildings.

Currently, only ruins remain from the castle built by Balaban. The remains of the lower two tiers of walls, towers, gate arches and foundations of household and residential buildings have been preserved.
