Uzhhorod

Greek Catholic Cathedral

Ukraine, Uzhgorod, Transcarpathian region, str. Capitol 9.

Description:

One of the attractions of Uzhgorod is the monumental Cathedral, erected from 1640 to 1646 with the surety and support of Count Jan Neuet. He issued a special certificate that allowed to carry out construction work on the Castle Hill.

In 1775, Empress Maria Theresa transferred this church to the Greek Catholic diocese. Bishop Andrei Bachinsky rebuilt the cathedral according to the Eastern rite and erected a chapel in honor of the Virgin. On the plaque on October 15, 1780, the entire history of the temple was recorded in Latin.

In addition, two bells were installed: the first monotonous Ivan and the second three-tonne bell. Both bell towers have clocks with chimes, donated by Augustine Enkovsky. And under the cathedral was a crypt with the burial of bishops.

More than once, the Greek Catholic Cathedral will experience restoration work. But in 1949, during the Soviet era, the property of the temple was confiscated and transferred to the Orthodox denomination. Only in 1991 the cathedral was returned to the Greek Catholic community. Currently, you can see not only the external splendor of the cathedral, but also the internal painting of the XVIII century and paintings by the artist F. Vydra.
