Crusade and Exaltation Cathedral
Description:
The Holy Cross Cathedral in Uzhgorod is an architectural monument of the XVII century and one of the most famous and popular attractions of the city. It was founded by the Jesuits in 1640 and throughout its history was the spiritual center of the city.
Originally belonged to the Jesuit order, but after its liquidation in the XVIII century passed to the Greek Catholics. In Soviet times it was transferred to the Orthodox Church, later used as a library, now returned to the Greek Catholics.
The cathedral has changed its exterior and interior several times, but at the same time perfectly preserved its decoration and today is part of the architectural ensemble of the city center. It is a baroque structure decorated with a portico with columns, a staircase of red marble and a three-tiered dome. In the bell towers of the temple there are huge domes, weighing one and three tons. The interior of the temple is no less rich - the interior was painted with a skillful painting in the baroque style of the XVII century, which has partially survived to this day.
