Uzhgorod Castle

d. Uzhgorod, st. Capitol, 33

Description:

Uzhgorod Castle is the historical center of the city and one of the most preserved monuments of defense architecture in Ukraine. For the first time the fortress is mentioned in the chronicles of the IX century, but researchers attribute its foundation to the VII century.

The founders of the castle are considered to be a tribe of Croats, but he received a modern look in the XIV century, when he passed into the possession of the Italian family of Ruete. Throughout its history, the fortifications of the castle have never been taken by storm. After the loss of its defensive value, the premises of the castle were used as a gymnasium, and later as a local history museum. To this day, the palace-cytadel of the castle, its fortifications, bastions and a 10-meter moat depth are perfectly preserved. Also on the territory of the castle you can visit the restaurant and tasting hall of Transcarpathian wines.
