Description:

Vinnytsia Regional Universal Scientific Library is an institution with a rich history, in which there are moments of joy and suffering, heroism and a new birth. It all began in 1902, when, seeking to honor the memory of N.V. Gogol, the city Duma of Vinnytsia decided to create a library. The work boiled over - the necessary funds were allocated, and the Vinnytsia architect G.E. Artynov began work on the project. In 1907, the building’s equipment was fully completed, and the Library was completed. Gogol received its first readers.

After the revolution, the library became a center for the elimination of illiteracy, its library fund increased significantly due to the nationalization of private collections. In 1925, the library was named after K. A. Timiryazev, 5 years later the scientific department was included in it, and in 1936 the institution was located in a new, three-storey building.

The library experienced its most tragic years during the fascist occupation. During the retreat, German troops completely burned it, destroying up to 300,000 books. Only a small part of the resources was saved by hiding the books in the basements of the library department in Muravyov.

Its restoration continued until 1955. After 10 years, the library became scientific, in addition to the usual two departments - the reading room and the city subscription, additional ones were opened, which housed literature on various branches of economy, technology, law, science and art.

Now its fund has 500 thousand books, 300 thousand magazines, a rich collection of newspaper and music publications. Timiryazevka was among the first to provide open access to valuable and rare publications, digitizing and posting them on its website.

Due to its history and importance, the library named after K. A. Timiryazev has become a cultural center and the pride of Vinnitsa, its landmark.
