Kempa Island

Kempa Island, Vinnytsia, Vinnytsia region, Ukraine

Description:

Rarely in what city you can see natural attractions, and in Vinnitsa there is such a place, and in the center of the city is the island of Kempa. Interestingly, this island has an artificial origin, i.e. once it was a peninsula, and turned it into an island only as a protective bastion. Fortifications were built on it, which, unfortunately, have not survived.

Kempa has always been an integral part of the city, at different times there was a prison, the city treasury, the headman's estate with outbuildings. Two bridges across the ducts of Buga connected the island with the city, they ran a tram service. The bridges were destroyed during the war, and after they were replaced by a pontoon crossing, which is still in operation today.

In Soviet times, the island was renamed Festival. The name is not symbolic, the music festival “Dawn over the Bug” was regularly held here, but after the collapse of the great and powerful USSR, it was returned to its original name.

Now the island is a huge park area with rare plants, bordered by picturesque banks and river channels. In the near future, it will turn into a huge entertainment complex with several leisure centers for children and adults, a winter garden and a hotel.
