Christmas church

Vinnytsia region, Tulchinsky district, Pechera village

Description:

Christmas Church (Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin)

The wooden church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, located on a high mountain above the Southern Bug, meets all those entering the Pechera from the side of Nemirov. It is located on a vast, strategically advantageous plateau, under which the ancient caves that gave the village its name are hidden. It was here, on the site of the ancient Russian settlement, in the XVII century. built his castle Moldavian lord Duka, whom the Turkish sultan then appointed the ruler of the Right Bank of Ukraine. After the expulsion of Duka from Ukraine in 1764, the castle was dismantled for building materials, using them to build the foundation and fence of the Christmas Church. The later bell tower is probably built on the basis of one of the defensive towers. From the plateau in front of the church opens the most breathtaking panorama of the Southern Bug Valley with a cascade of rapids.
