Holy Transfiguration Cathedral

21 Cathedral Street

Description:

The main functioning Orthodox church in Vinnitsa, a unique monument of Baroque architecture. It was built in the XVIII century as a Dominican church, but in 1832 it was abolished and transferred to the jurisdiction of the Orthodox clergy. The history of the temple is inextricably linked with the name of Bratslav judge and philanthropist Mikhail Groholsky, who on his own money restored it from 1758 to 1760. Subsequently, the tomb of the Groholsky family was built here, carefully preserved after the conversion of the church to Orthodoxy.

The cathedral was visited more than once by distinguished guests: it was visited by Nicholas I with his sons Alexander and Nicholas, later by Simon Petliura and Jozef Pilsudsky. In the temple took the sacrament of baptism and wedding famous Ukrainian writers Mikhail Kotsyubinsky.

With the advent of Soviet power, difficult times came for the Transfiguration Cathedral. All valuables were removed from it, and the building was given to a rubber warehouse. Then it housed a gym, and later - a hall of organ music. Only in 1990 the cathedral was again placed at the full disposal of the church.
