Zhytomyr

Castle Mountain

d. Zhytomyr, st. Castle

Description:

The history of Zhytomyr began, according to the chronicles, in the XII century with a wooden castle-fortress on a high cape above the Kamenka River. The oldest building next to the main gate of the castle was the wooden Trinity Church (now approximately in its place the Khrestovozdvizhenskaya Church). In the XIX century, the fortress, having lost its importance by this time, was dismantled.

The last serious destruction of the Castle Hill was during the liberation battles from the German fascist invaders - the quarters of the old Zhytomyr were almost completely destroyed.

In our time on the Castle Hill there is a park, surrounded since the Middle Ages by such streets as the cathedral, where thousands of people come every year to visit the Cathedral of St. Sofia.

Just a few steps from the cathedral on the street of the Cathedral guests of the city will find a restaurant with live music "Zamkova Gora", where tasty and inexpensive will be able to satisfy hunger with Ukrainian and European dishes.
