Taranco Palace
25 de Mayo 376, Montevideo 11100, Uruguay
Description:
Taranco Palace, located in front of Zabala Plaza, in the heart of the Old Town of Montevideo, was built in the early twentieth century.
The building was designed by French architects Charles Louis Giraud and Jules Leon, the latter of whom also designed the Arc de Triomphe and the Petit Palace in Paris. The palace, built in the colonial style, contains valuable Uruguayan furniture. Currently, the Montevideo Museum of Decorative Art is opened in the palace. The museum presents a huge collection of fabrics, ceramic, bronze and other products of the Greco-Roman period. The palace is often used as a meeting place for the Uruguayan government.
The palace was commissioned by the Ortiz Taranco family in 1910. The building was built on the site of the first Montevidey Theatre in the historical center of the city.
