Punta del Este

Fortress of Saint Teresa

36 km from Chui, Department of Rocha, Uruguay

Description:

Uruguay is one of the most peaceful countries in the world. However, there was a time when its territory was endlessly divided by the Portuguese and Spanish. Echoes of these conquests were preserved in the ruins of several fortresses. One of them is the fortress of St. Teresa, built in the 18th century, which is located in an area under the general name of St. Teresa, which is very close to the border with Brazil.

The fortress is located on the territory of the national park, so you should be prepared for the fact that a fee is charged for entry here. In addition to the ruins of the fortress itself, there is a small museum inside, which collected a small collection of weapons and gives an idea of the functioning of military garrisons of the past.

The former fortress, built in the form of an irregular pentagon, occupies a fairly large territory. Here it is very interesting to wander in silence among the old moistened walls. The fortress is declared a historical monument and is one of the few bastions of colonial America, the preservation of which is monitored by the state.
