Dover Castle

Great Britain, England, County of Kent, Dover

Description:

The ancient Dover Castle towers over the Pas de Calais, guarding this natural gate to England for hundreds of years. Its towers, proudly looking from a snow-white cliff to the busy port of Dover, withstood the difficult test of time, giving us the opportunity today to admire this wonderful monument of fortification architecture.

Fortifications on the site of the castle existed before the Roman conquest of Britain. Construction of the modern castle began in the second half of the twelfth century with the construction of a four-storey citadel - the largest fortress in Britain. Four powerful square towers towered at its corners, and the walls connecting them were reinforced by pilaster towers. The castle courtyard is surrounded by a high wall guarded by fourteen towers. The main gate leading to Dover Castle is the Castellan Gate. The construction of the castle's fortifications was completed in the eighteenth century with the fortification of the eastern wall with three semi-bastions and the construction of the Constable Bastion in the western part of the castle.

In the Middle Ages, many underground tunnels were cut into the thickness of the white rock under the castle, which were greatly expanded during the Napoleonic Wars. Soldiers' barracks were located here. In the twentieth century, this underground complex was used as a command post during the Dunkirk operation.
