Munsell forts off the coast of England

Great Britain off the coast of England

Description:

The Munsell Forts off the coast of England are the abandoned Munsell Sea Forts, World War II fortifications built at the mouths of the British Rivers Thames and Mersey. These are the UK’s air defence systems.

The unusual structures were designed by the famous British engineer Guy Ansell Maunsell as part of the Special Defense of the Thames Estuary.

Today, these fortifications are known as the Maunsell Sea Forts. Their main tasks were to protect the major industrial centers of England, as well as to protect against air attacks from the most vulnerable direction - from the sea - from the mouths of the Thames and Mersey rivers and to protect the approaches from the sea to London and Liverpool, respectively.

The aim is to prevent German aircraft from bombing British ports and mining busy shipping routes.

The forts were abandoned in the early 1950s and at the time, built in international waters during the global crisis, they had to be demolished under international law.

The fort, located in the open sea, was abandoned and abandoned.
