Maunsell sea forts
Viking Coastal Trail, Birchington, Kent, UK
Description:
The Maunsell Sea Forts are located in the North Sea, not far from the coast of Great Britain, at the mouths of the Mersey and Thames rivers. These are former military forts of air defense of England, which were built in 1942-1943, the famous British engineer Guy Ansell Maunsell. The main task of these facilities was to protect large industrial centers of Great Britain from bombers, as well as to protect shipping lanes from mining.
According to the specification, each tower of the fort was made of reinforced concrete and weighed 750 tons. Each fort consisted of seven interconnected platforms. The central tower served as a radar, the rest were located near it. They were placed anti-aircraft guns and machine guns, for air protection and protection of the main tower.
£21 million was spent on the construction of 21 towers. After the war, the towers became unnecessary, after which in the 60s a weather station was located on one of them. Then the legendary radio boom began, and the towers began to take over pirate radio stations, which after 7 years were closed one by one.
On September 2, 1967, one of the retired colonels of the British Army captured one of the towers and announced the creation of an independent principality of Sealand on its territory, after which he proclaimed himself Prince Roy I.
