Saint Helena Island
Description:
Napoleon, while in exile on the island of St. Helena, wrote these cheerful lines: "On this cursed island, for most of the year, neither the sun nor the moon is always rain or fog." The island has always belonged to the British Empire, but even the garrison was reluctantly stationed here. The island is far from the big land: to South America almost 3000 km, to Africa more than 2000 km and even to the nearest island swim for almost a day. There is only a single mail ship to St. Helena.
The main attractions of the island are Longwood House, where Napoleon lived, and his empty grave, since the remains of the emperor were moved to Paris in 1840. In Plantation House, the home of the local governor, you can meet the Seychelles turtle Jonathan, who recently turned 180 years old. Nearby is the old post office, where you can buy rare stamps. And if you go a little further, you will come to Jacob's staircase, which consists of 699 steps carved into the rock. From above you can admire the rocks, the endless ocean and breathe on the far land. As Napoleon said, “There is nothing here but time.”
