York City Hall

Saint Helens Square, York, North Yorkshire YO1 9QN, United Kingdom

Description:

Old York is an amazing place of tales and legends. The town hall, located in the heart of the city, is an integral part of its history. The building was built in the XV century and was the meeting place of the guilds controlling the trade of the city.

The present building is a restored version of the old structure, which was badly damaged in the bombing during World War II. This is a Victorian building with a lush interior. The columns are made from the oak trees of the Galtres Royal Forest. Five stained glass windows in openwork decoration depict different periods of York history. The town hall is part of the administrative complex, and is also used for cultural events.

The concert hall is designed for 1500 seats. It hosts various exhibitions, competitions, classical and foreign concerts with the participation of British and foreign performers. The art gallery exhibits about two hundred paintings of surrealists and progressive contemporary artists of the mid-70s of the last century. The town hall is located on the banks of the picturesque river Uz, which holds many interesting facts about the city.
