York Castle
Clifford's Tower, York YO1 9SA, UK
Description:
A significant historical landmark of England is York Castle. This defensive complex was built in the XI century of magnesial limestone and hewn stone. The castle was an important royal fortification in the north of England. It included several towers, prisons, courts and other buildings on the south bank of the Foss River.
One of the main buildings of the castle was the Clifford Tower, built in 1262. It was located on a hill and was the main strategic site. For over 1,000 years, the castle has been used as a military base, administrative headquarters, treasury, prison and court.
Looking at the structure today, it is difficult to divide its long bloody history into separate periods. It involves battles, mass killings, fires, executions and burials.
There is a museum on the territory of the complex, which presents unique expositions that allow visitors to go back several centuries and plunge into the atmosphere of that time. This defensive complex is an architectural monument and is of great historical value.
