Mountfitchet Castle in Stansted

Stansted, Essex CM24 8SP, UK

Description:

Mountfitchet Castle and the Norman village around it is a unique all-weather entertainment complex where history and the desire to touch the simple life of ancestors come together to give the whole family the opportunity to spend an unforgettable day outdoors.

The site was once a Viking settlement, and after the arrival of William the Conqueror in 1066, two wooden fortresses, Mott and Bailey, arose. In the XII century, they were replaced by a solid stone building, called Mountfitchet Castle by the name of its owner. Unfortunately, it did not last long. In 1215, after an attack on the castle of King John, the stones were looted by the locals for their own use. Only the remains of the walls have survived.

Until 1975, the surrounding area was completely deserted. However, one beautiful night, the landowner Alan Goldsmith had a dream that prompted him to restore the castle. Now everything here is as in the Middle Ages: a high palisade fence, a watchtower, peasant huts, freely walking pets. You can sit at the potter's wheel, or you can feed hand deer, try on mail or try to hold a knight's sword in your hands. And on the territory of the historical complex there is a magnificent toy museum, where 80 thousand exhibits of the Victorian era until the end of the twentieth century are collected.
