Description:

The majestic ruins of Restormel Castle are located in Cornwall County. This is a beautiful architectural monument, allowing you to get acquainted with the distinctive features of the Norman defensive structures, built in the style of "motte and bailey", which means hill and courtyard. In the early Middle Ages, English fortresses were often a courtyard surrounded by a palisade, on a hill inside which a stone fortress was erected.

So was built in the early twelfth century castle Restormel, A hundred years later the wooden walls of the fortress were replaced by stone, which are quite well preserved to this day. The courtyard of Restormel Castle in plan is almost a perfect circle. Barracks, residential and household premises were located along its perimeter, forming the walls of the castle, the height of which exceeded seven meters. The gate to the castle was guarded by a square watchtower.

In the seventeenth century, after the English Civil War, the castle gradually fell into decline and by 1740 was already in ruins. Today, the ruins of the castle, located in a picturesque area on the banks of the Foey River, are popular with tourists.
