St. Andrew's Castle

The Scores, Saint Andrews, Fife KY16 9AR

Description:

The twelfth century in England is characterized by the anxiety of political and social life, so many noblemen were forced to build impregnable stone castles in order to protect themselves from attacks during popular unrest. For the higher clergy, bishops and archbishops, the first of these castles was the castle of St. Andrew. Built in 1200, it withstood many sieges and armed attacks. Many times the castle passed from one hand to another as a trophy, until it finally became a ruin in 1606.

Now St. Andrews is only part of the former greatness. The ruins of the southern wall of the castle, the towers included in the complex, the dungeon, as well as tunnels, underground mines and passages have been preserved.

Travelers love to visit the dungeon and the castle tower, resembling the shape of a bottle. The dark atmosphere of these places sends visitors straight to the Middle Ages. And passing through the underground tunnels, you can imagine how the clergy sheltered from the attackers during the uprisings.
