Tonton Castle
2 Castle Green, Taunton, Somerset TA1 1LR, United Kingdom
Description:
Tonton Castle is a fortress built to protect the city of the same name in Somerset County. The oldest fortifications date back to 710, they were built on the site of an earlier monastery. In 815, a small church cathedral was erected here, and a few years later, Queen Frithugyth and the Bishops of Wessex completed a beautiful manor house. Tonton Castle is one of the most striking monuments of Anglo-Saxon and Norman architecture. The last owner of the mansion was the Bishop of Winchester.
Tonton Castle is built in three tiers, its height is 15 meters, and the maximum width is 12 meters. The thickness of the walls of the building is 4 meters. By 1780, many parts of the castle were in dilapidated condition and were soon renovated by the London banker Sir Benjamin Hammett. At this time, the structure has a new serrated roof, lattice arched windows and a grand staircase. A feature of Tonton Castle is a wide circular tower located in its left wing. The Military Museum is currently located here.
