Bath

Unique town of Bath and fabulous English villages

Description:

I invite you on a trip to the beautiful city of Bath, called the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and also the majestic resort city of Europe (Great Spa Towns of Europe).

Bath is known unique in England thermal hot springs, the nature of which is still not quite known, "the generosity and mystery of nature." It is assumed that this rainwater millennia ago, collected in an underground tank, and breaking through under pressure on the surface in the amount of 1 million liters every day, with a temperature of +45-46 degrees.

For the Celts, the place was ritual, here the gods were praised and worshiped. Knowledge of the healing properties of the mysterious water brings legends to us.

During Roman rule, known as Aqua Sulis, the city attracted pilgrims from all over the empire. The Romans built a huge complex of baths here, the excavations of which we will visit during the excursion. The story of living together two very different cultures, Celtic and Roman, will be revealed before our eyes.

We will walk through the old streets in the city center, many of which repeat the lines of their medieval predecessors of the Anglo-Saxon period. King Edgar was crowned in Bath Abbey in 973 in a ceremony that formed the basis of all future English coronations.

The Norman period is characterized by the construction of a 100-meter cathedral, which was one of the largest in Europe. The present church dates back to the 16th century, and is famous for its magnificent facade with sculptures of angels climbing into the sky through two stone staircases representing Jacob’s Staircase.

The most famous period in the history of the city, of course, was the luxurious 18th century. During the reign of Georges I, II and III, Bath became an elegant resort town. All high society gathered in the city not only for therapeutic purposes, but also for communication and various entertainments; gambling, dancing, concerts. The city did everything to match the level and taste of its visitors. The intriguing world of the 18th century will open before us in the Palladian architecture of the city, the preserved luxurious halls, the mores and customs of that elegant era will become clear.

On the way to Bath, we will pass through several beautiful villages, the tradition and originality of which will give a feel to the atmosphere of archaic England.

The tour perfectly combines with an excursion to Windsor or Stonehenge, or Salisbury.
