Prior Park
Ralph Allen Drive, Bath BA2 5AH, United Kingdom
Description:
If you want to see a classic English park, as it is represented in the continental part of Europe, then you should definitely visit the landscaped Prior Park complex in Bath.
The ideological inspiration for the creation of the park was the poet Alexander Pope, the direct performer was the gardener Brown, and the local entrepreneur and philanthropist Ralph Allen financed this event. From 1734 until his death in 1764, he invested in the development of these territories.
Already in 1737, 55,200 trees, elms and pine trees were planted along the slopes of the valley. In the lower part of the park, artificial ponds were dug, where fish were launched. A bridge was built over one of the lakes based on the project of the outstanding master of the Middle Ages Andrea Palladio. There are only four such bridges in the world today. The classic-style mansion, built by architect John Wood on the park grounds in the 1740s, is now owned by Prior Park College.
A walk through the park will allow you to see the remains of an Iron Age settlement and a Roman settlement, the Gothic cathedral and the grotto of Mrs. Allen. The story of volunteer guides will supplement your visual impressions with historical information. From the hills will open a wonderful view of Bath, cascading lakes and lush greenery of the park. The only condition is to come here by public transport or on foot. Car parking is provided only for people with special needs.
