Farley Hungerford Castle

Farleigh Hungerford, Bath, Somerset BA2 7RS, UK

Description:

The medieval castle of Farley Hungerford is located in the valley of the river From, Somerset. Today’s castle is extensive picturesque ruins and a chapel. The exterior walls are better preserved than the interior structures, which is unusual for English castles.

The historic Farley Hungerford Castle, known simply as Farley Castle, was built from 1377 to 1383. At first it was the manor house of the Montfort family, and in the 1370s the castle was bought and completed by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Thomas Hungerford. He transformed the construction of square forms and equipped a large corner tower, and a moat was dug around the castle.

In the courtyard, the foundations of most of the castle buildings are preserved, and in the southwest - massive walls. The chapel houses a small collection of wall paintings as well as the tomb of Sir Thomas Hungerford. There is also a crypt with lead coffins of the XVI century, which historians consider an important archaeological heritage of the country.
