Mitchell Library
157 North St, Glasgow, Glasgow City G3 7DA, UK
Description:
The Mitchell Library is one of the largest public libraries in Europe. The building was built in 1911 and has long been the hallmark of Glasgow. The green dome, topped by a statue by Thomas Clapperton, is one of the symbols of the city.
Its holdings total about 1.5 million units, including books, periodicals and maps. The library also houses Glasgow city documents dating back to the twelfth century. The fixed assets of the library are stored in the western building adjacent to the main one. Previously, St. Andrews Hall was located here, which is the venue for various concerts and balls. In 1962, this building was almost destroyed by fire, after extensive reconstruction it was transferred to the library.
Currently, the library complex includes reading rooms with free Internet access, a subscription department, an extensive online database, a cozy cafe-bar, as well as the Mitchell Theatre, designed for 500 seats.
