Templeton at Green Park

7 Templeton Ct, Glasgow, Glasgow City G40 1EF

Description:

Templeton on Green, more commonly known as Templeton Business Center, is a prominent building near the People's Palace and the Dolton Fountain, overlooking them. The building was originally built in 1892 as a carpet factory for wealthy manufacturer James Templeton.

To work on the project was specially invited the famous William Leiper, author of the Doge's Palace in Venice. Several preliminary designs have already been rejected by the Glasgow Corporation, as local wealthy citizens did not want to see a factory near their residences. Thus, it was decided to build a building luxurious enough not to spoil the ensemble in this place of the city.

The existence of the carpet factory was associated with a number of tragedies. So, during the construction in 1889, part of the foundation collapsed, which killed 29 women engaged in weaving in sheds near the construction site. Evidence of this tragedy was engraved on a stone erected in 2005 during a renovation at the base of Templeton Gate. In 1900, a terrible fire took many lives. Since 1984, the Scottish Development Agency has been based here, and the bad reputation of this beautiful red building has dispelled. It now houses a business center.
