Princes Square Shopping Centre
48 Buchanan Street, Glasgow G1 3JN, Scotland, UK
Description:
Princess Square is a six-story shopping mall that reopened in the mid-eighties. It is located around a decorative atrium near Buchanan Street on its east side, near Central Station. The center was originally a four-storey yellow sandstone trading building built in 1841. It was owned by James Campbell, later knighted by Queen Victoria. Having received the status of Lord Mayor of Glasgow, he gave the building the name “Princes Square” in honor of the birthday celebration of the Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VII.
The mall has become an unusual occurrence in Scotland as it has proven to be the highest quality establishment of its kind compared to other emerging shopping centres. Prince Square has become an integral part of the city’s structure.
The interior design and interior of Princess Square are represented by two wide symmetrical staircases decorated with art nouveau balustrades. Between them hangs a copy of Foucault's Pendulum. The mall has enough dark inhospitable corners, for example, under stairs or in the side aisles. The decor and interior of the building tried to keep as intact as possible, while creating space for modern shops and catering.
