George Square
Description:
George Square is Glasgow’s central square, named after King George III, who started it in 1781.
At the beginning of its history, the square did not have a presentable appearance, but in the XIX century, wealthy merchants who lived next door began to ennoble the central place of the city. Thus, the square was decorated and turned into one of the most famous sights of Glasgow.
There are monuments to famous Scots in the square. In the middle of the square is a monument to Sir Walter Scott. Equestrian statues of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert also adorn the square. In 1888, by order of Queen Victoria, the city council building was built on the square.
The main square of the city is popular not only among tourists, but also among residents of the city. Public meetings, protests and political rallies, New Year holidays and concerts are often held here.
For those who like to travel, but want to visit the main attractions, it will be interesting to know that near the square is the Queen Street Station.
