St. Enoch Metro Station

Description:

St. Enoch Metro Station is the first metro station north of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. It is located in the heart of the city, but does not intersect with the main metro line. From the station to Glasgow Central Station, as well as to Argyle Street railway station, it is only a few minutes walk. During the year, the metro station passes an average of 15 million passengers.

Particular attention is paid to the ancient above-ground part of the station of St. Enoch. The building was built in 1896 by James Miller. It used to house ticket offices and the headquarters of the District Rail and Metro Company in Glasgow. To this day, this building remains the most distinctive, richly decorated among all other subway buildings in the city. Its construction used elements of Jacobin Renaissance and late Victorian styles. The main part of the building is made of red sandstone.

During the modernization of the subway in 1977, the building was carefully guarded from damage during repairs, it was even raised above the ground for some time while work was underway to improve the underground platforms. Later, instead of ticket offices, there was a tourist information center, and since 2009, the Cafe Nero coffee shop has opened in the building.
