Inverness

Inverness attractions

Description:

The sights of Inverness are definitely the cornerstone of this excursion. As you can see in the photo, there are plenty of them. But first, it would be good to feel the romance of this unusual capital, the capital of Highland Scotland.

The famous English writer and traveler Henry Morton wrote at the beginning of the last century:

“Inverness upset and embarrassed me. I used to think Edinburgh was the most romantic city in Scotland. I'm not so sure about that anymore. I think it’s unfair to have two such great candidates in one country. Edinburgh is undoubtedly a more luxurious and majestic city, but Inverness has more romance. It has the advantage that it stands on the river: the wide beautiful river Ness, flowing through the city center, gives it a special charm.

Romance, mysticism and legends are saturated with literally every stone. Only the gilded oak leaves on the pavement in front of the oldest building in Inverness, which are worth! And the stones on the pedestrian streets with quotations and poems carved on them, as if they came to us from the distant past, when the Pict tribes lived here.

Romance added, of course, and the unforgettable Jacobite handsome Prince Charlie, and his brave savior Flora McDonald. And here it is time to climb the observation deck to Inverness Castle and look at the city from above, and at the same time marvel at the abundance of colorful wild rabbits on the castle slope, peacefully pinching grass amid the bustle of the city and the noise of cars. And of course, compare your watch with the flower clock on the other side of the castle hill.

In a romantic way, you are set up and the atmosphere of the capital of highlanders. Here, for some reason, you immediately begin to think about the sublime. Perhaps this has an incredible abundance of various churches on both banks of the Ness River. By the way, there is a unique opportunity to put a candle in front of Orthodox icons, a precious gift of the Russian tsar to the local bishop.

Literally every city building can sing an ode here. And the eclecticism of Victorian and Georgian styles with interspersed Greek architecture and Gothic makes you constantly gasp and hunt! Each building has its own amazing history.

To discover the capital of the Highlands, it is desirable and even necessary to walk! Not only along a pedestrian central street like Moscow’s Old Arbat, but also along the suspension bridges of the Ness River and its secret islets.

Where did you see salmon in the middle of the river? And in Inverness, please!

Here the famous Caledonian Canal begins, tropical plants and giant cacti bloom, huge goldfish feel great in the pond, emerald green golf courses stretch for many hundreds of meters.

Cozy Scottish restaurants with beer and locally produced single malt whiskey are so beckoning to turn off the planned route.

Shops with products of national crafts also leave no one indifferent. I want to buy something purely Scottish!

For those who like to climb, you can climb the hill, where once a very long time stood the fortress of a formidable pagan king, whom a daring Irish monk came to convert to Christianity. Or climb the hill of elves, from where through the thickets of centuries-old cedars opens an unexpectedly beautiful view of the serene Gulf of the North Sea on the one hand and the Caledonian Canal on the other. And what are the islands with suspension bridges - a favorite place for walking locals!

I have listed only a small part of what I usually suggest to see during an excursion to Inverness and its immediate vicinity. I believe that after seeing it, you will surely have a sense of flight and you will have beautiful dreams!
