Glencoe - Scotland's protected trails
Description:
Who hasn’t dreamed of walking through an ancient volcano? Yes! Glenco is one of the oldest preserved volcanoes of the caldera type on our planet, whose age is 400-500 million years!
It is more correct to call this breathtaking valley “Glen Coe”. Glen in Gaelic is a narrow mountain valley, and Koe is the name of the river flowing through it. But traditionally everyone calls this place “Glenco” with the accent on the last syllable.
So, leaving early in the morning from Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, and moving to Glencoe along the Great Valley, on the way we will see many amazing places: The legendary Loch Ness Lake, Alduri Castle, the ruins of Arkhart Castle, the gateways of the Caledonian Canal, Loch Oich and Loch Lohi, the Well of Seven Heads and of course Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK! But do not forget that its top most of the year is hidden behind clouds.
Glencoe is considered one of the most beautiful places in Highland Scotland! It is part of the Ben Nevis and Glenco National Reserve. Therefore, only slightly touching on the sad history of this region (especially since the whole history of the Highland is one continuous tragedy and pain!), we will focus on the stunning nature.
Weather permitting, you can try your luck and delve into the transverse valley between the mountain ranges of the Three Sisters, where the MacDonald clan of Glencoe once hid the cattle they had stolen. This is one of the Highland conservation trails:
Regardless of the weather, we can drive through another transverse valley, where in addition to admiring the views, there is a high probability of meeting kayak rafters. The weather is not a problem! : And also to collect from the mountain river delicious highland water!
If you know the places, you can see and come very close to wild deer. If they have something to feed them, then they will.
Everything we see in Glencoe can be found in other parts of Highland Scotland, but here it is as if it is specially put together to capture the human imagination and remain in memory for a long time!
This excursion can easily be continued to other fantastic places of the Highlands, for example, to the island of Skye (see Winged Island Skye and On the most magical places of the island of Skye).
