Church of St. Mary the Great

Senate House Hill, Cambridge, CB2 3PQ, United Kingdom

Description:

St. Mary’s Church is one of Cambridge’s most beautiful and important temples. The building was built between 1478 and 1519 in the style of “perpendicular Gothic”, and the tower of the church was completed in 1608. Inside is a large gallery decorated with 1860s stained glass windows. Here is the cover on the coffin of Henry VII.

If you climb the 123 steps of the church tower, you can admire the beautiful view of Cambridge. The Church has an inseparable connection with the history of the city and the University. Here, at different times, speeches of prominent philosophers and church reformers took place. It is also considered a University Church and according to the law of the University of Cambridge, its students must live within a radius of 3 kilometers from the church, and teachers - 20 kilometers.

Musical traditions have long been honored here. Back in 1724, the Cambridge Youth Society was formed, which is responsible for the ringing of the church bells. It is the oldest bell ringing society in the UK. Unusually, the church has two organs, one used for church ceremonies and the other for university ceremonies.
